Big Step

We moved our TV (and subsequently our Tivo) to the COG. We now have no TV in our apartment... which is a BIG, no... HUGE, no.... GINORMOUS step for me. Have I gotten across the drastic-ness of this move? I imagine my dad might actually pass out when he hears about this...

Adam and I started realizing that we spend pretty much every night in the main house. Once Chase goes down, we go over and hang with the parents, watch a movie, spend time on the computer or scrapbook (only I do that last one ;~). Currently the TV goes unused at night.

There are a few shows* coming back from summer hiatus that we really like and if we want to watch them, the Tivo has to be in the COG. In the apartment, the TV is just too close to Chase and we don't want to risk waking him up just to watch a show.

Most importantly, I can't seem to not watch TV during the day. I turn it off but that only lasts for a little while before it eventually ends up back on... either for viewing or for background noise. Either way, it's not the example I want to set for Chase. I have struggled with this daily ever since I became a stay at home mom. In the beginning it was easier to fool myself into thinking the behavior was ok but that doesn't fly anymore. He is active, full of exploration, engaging and needs my undivided attention. He needs a mom who gets down and plays, pushes his little mind and watches him really discover new things. I have been beating myself up about this for months now and I finally have the perfect opportunity/excuse to do something about it! Here's to Monday morning with no TV!

Wish me luck!

*If you are wondering what shows I was referring to... The Office, Boston Legal, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Biggest Loser, Lost... those are the ones that I can think of off the top of my head ;~)

The TV is a love/hate relationship with me as well sometimes. I don't really watch it much when it's just Landon and me during the day, but sit down at times and watch while he is napping. But like you I do have it on for the background noise. I'm sure it will feel weird at first having it out of the house, but in a few weeks I bet you won't even notice that it is gone.

Oh, and thanks for your encouragement on my blog. I had remembered that y'all were doing all of this for the same reason, and were following Dave's plan. I am so excited about doing this that I can hardly stop talking about it to anyone who will listen. Hopefully, with lots of help from the Lord, we will met our goals!!

Well, yes, I couldn't breathe for a minute - what will you do without the constant background noise?

LOL! We never even moved a TV into our apt...something I am pretty thankful for as spend too much time on the computer as it is.

I don't know if I've suggested this book before, but if you haven't read it it's a good read for new moms...well any mom really

"Who Got Peanut Butter on my Daily Planner?" by Cindy Sigler Dagnan

I have a feeling that I've already suggested it, but anyway it's geared for young Christian mothers and has some great stuff in it, like dealing with making the most of your time with your children...

....you know, I may just read it again!

Love The Office and Boston Legal. That's the beauty of the dvr. I can not find time to watch t.v. anymore. Use to, not sure what happened, but now I just set a series recording and not worry about it. I still end up deleting quite a bit without watching it, usually I try at bedtime, then I'm sleeping and waking it up, deleting it in my sleep. Wait. What are we talking about? Oh yeah, you'll do fine, get a radio for the background noice (I've GOT to have 'white' noice goin'). Apparently I need sleep, lol, can't concentrate today.

Ummm Greys Anatomy?!?! Don't worry... I'm not sure how to work our remotes (since there are 25 that I need to use to turn the darn thing on) after having this tv for over 2 years. I miss slash delete slash mess up basically all of my shows. We have ample recordings of Burn Notice and Ultimate Fighter. Of course his shows are saved for life and never ever get missed! :- ) I'm still alive and a functioning adult-- most of the time. GOOD LUCK and I expect an update to see how it's going!

Power to you! We haven't used our TV for "television shows" for nearly 4 years now - we actually never plugged in the cable when we moved - so we wouldn't be tempted. It's was absolutely the best decision!
